RIVERPEOPLENATIONSTATEPEOPLE: Opening Reception

Please join us on Friday, June 30, 2017 —the eve of Canada150—for riverpeoplenationstatepeople, an exhibition and the start of an unfolding set of displays, questions, and responses recognizing that history is enriched when it is shared through multiple voices.

The Kamloops Museum & Archives (KMA), in partnership with guest curator Tania Willard (Secwépemc Nation), Secwépemc Museum & Heritage Park, and Stk’emlupsemc te Secwépemc Nation, has produced an exhibition demonstrating a new vision for engagement with the Secwépemc culture. The exhibition deepens the timeline of Canada to acknowledge Indigenous histories and speaks to diverse cultural perspectives on the region’s colonial history.

Canada 150 marks 150 years since Confederation. It also marks an opportunity to take stock of ourselves as a nation, a state, and a collection of peoples. Kamloops takes part in making multiple histories every day. The KMA wants to do the best job it can to preserve, present, and activate these stories. riverpeoplenationstatepeople marks the start of a sustained commitment to use the KMA’s space and tools as a sounding board for voices from Kamloops’ oldest and newest cultural communities.

Canada 150 marks the beginning of riverpeoplenationstatepeople

To Canada With Love: A Canada 150 Travelling Pavilion Celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday

Since 2008, photographer Tim Van Horn has taken 54,000 portraits of Canadians across our country. He's visited remote fishing villages, small prairie towns, and metropolitan centres to document people’s lives. On July 1, 2017, after eight years of travelling and building connections across the country, Van Horn will reveal the Canadian mosaic - an all‑encompassing, inspiring portrayal of who we are as a country and a people.

But first …

He’ll stop in Kamloops! It’s worth noting that Kamloops is one of only 150 stops along his route, and Tim will be here for only one day.

On Friday, June 23, from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm, the travelling pavilion will be parked outside the Kamloops Museum & Archives (on 2nd Avenue, between St. Paul Street and Seymour Street). By visiting the pavilion, you’ll have the opportunity to be included in Van Horn’s ever‑expanding Canadian Mosaic Project.

Alongside the travelling pavilion, we are pleased to be hosting other exciting events that day. From 11:00 am to 6:00 pm, St. Andrews on the Square will be buzzing with activities, and you’ll find the Kamloops Heritage Railway, the Kamloops Arts Council’s Rivertown Players, and the Downtown Kamloops Ambassadors! There will also be outdoor seating, yoga, local artisans, games, and food trucks (A & D Dogs and JS-ausage).

Schedule of Events:

9:00 am-6:00 pm: Explore the Travelling Pavilion and meet Tim Van Horn.

10:00 am-4:00 pm: The KMA will present 10-minute Pop-Up Artifact Chats every hour on the hour, and the final chat will take place at 4:00 pm. Each Artifact Chat is different.

10:00-11:00 am: Mindful Movement with Let’s Move Studio.

11:00 am-6:00 pm: St. Andrew’s on the Square will host the Kamloops Heritage Railway, the Kamloops Arts Council's Rivertown Players, local artisans, and the Downtown Kamloops Ambassadors.

11:00 am-4:30 pm: Live Music: Malik Mohammed at 11:00 am; Frank Stofanik at 2:00 pm

5:00-6:00 pm: Yoga in the Park with Let’s Move Studio
